Shoalhaven Chef

Shoalhaven Chef supplies our North Shoalhaven Meals on Wheels services with delicious food prepared in line with the National Meal Guidelines for older people.

Operating from our new commercial kitchen in South Nowra, our professional chef Johno works with our skilled volunteers, freshly preparing nutrient-rich meals for our local area.

Mains Meals and Small Plates

Our main meals and small plates are nutritious for everyone, especially those over 65 or recovering from illness or injury. We cater for special dietary needs including low salt, gluten free, vegetarian, and texture modified.

Most supermarket ready-made meals don’t meet protein or calcium targets and can be high in sodium and fat. Our main meals and small plates, designed for our clients, are carefully prepared in our kitchen and come with nutritional information and ingredients listed.

Soups

For those times when you don’t feel like a full meal, tea and toast won’t give you the nutrition boost your body needs. Delicious, nutrient-rich soups are just as easy to prepare and contribute to overall better health through better nutrition. The smaller portions can be the ideal size for those with a smaller appetite, or reduced attention due to dementia.

Our current range of soups includes: Cauliflower, Chicken Noodle, Chinese Chicken & Corn, Cream of Mushroom, Potato & Leek, Pumpkin, Roasted Tomato, and Sweet Potato and Bacon.

Desserts

Studies show that as people age their tastes change, tending towards sweeter foods. Desserts are an ideal way to boost nutrient intake, building stronger bones and supporting better health. Shoalhaven Chef delivers delicious desserts that taste great to tempt decreasing appetites and are a great source of calcium and fibre.

Our current range of desserts (from March 2026) includes: Apple & Cinnamon Pie, Banana Cake, Chocolate Bavarian Slice, Orange & Honey Panna Cotta, Peaches & Cream Cake, Profiterole with Banana & Caramel, Rice Pudding with Citrus Poached Prunes, and Sticky Date Pudding.

Our Autumn/Winter menu offers Sweet Sides – optional extras to make the desserts extra special: Chantilly Cream, Cinnamon Crumble, Mixed Berry Topping and Pouring Custard. We also recommend adding custard or cream to your fruit- or cake-based desserts to make sure of your calcium requirements.

"If you are too tired to eat, try to have a nourishing dessert. Desserts are usually easy and pleasant to eat. A milk-base dessert such as custard or yoghurt with some canned fruit or a chopped up banana would be suitable. Dessert can be enjoyed at every meal."  – Eating Well, A Nutritional Resource for Older People and their Carers
